The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) has strongly condemned the teargassing of worshippers by police officers at a church in Nyeri County, calling the incident a serious violation of constitutional rights and freedom of worship.

According to the commission, the incident occurred while congregants were gathered for a church service, turning a place of prayer into a scene of panic and distress. Worshippers, including women, children, and the elderly, were forced to flee as tear gas filled the church compound.

KNCHR described the action as unjustified, excessive, and deeply troubling, emphasizing that places of worship are protected spaces under the Constitution and must never be treated as grounds for police operations. The commission noted that even when law enforcement is responding to security concerns, the use of force must be lawful, proportionate, and respectful of human dignity.

The human rights body has called for immediate investigations into the incident and accountability for the officers involved. It also urged the National Police Service to reinforce respect for human rights in all public operations, especially in sensitive spaces such as churches.

The incident has sparked public outrage, with many Kenyans questioning the increasing use of force in civilian spaces. KNCHR reiterated that the right to worship freely is non-negotiable, and any violation of this right threatens the foundations of a democratic society.
